The World is Alive with the Sound of Music

Most of the songs listed below are examples of what we call "standards" in the music trade. Some were borrowed from the internet, and some from my personal files. It seems I still have the numbers from my good guitar playing days. Some of the songs are there because they were made famous by some of the better vocalists (Sinatra, Cole, Page, Como, etc.) and some are from the great shows of Broadway.

What goes into making a great song? You might ask, what goes into creating great art. What makes one song a "standard," a work of art ... and another song a work of trash. What is art? It might be easier to first ask what art is not. It should not be mundane, boring, monotonous, noisy, and depressing ... In aesthetics, we learn that beauty causes the soul to soar high on the wings of eagles ... Art should be a means to this, in whatever form, and if this quality is not radiated, then it is not art.

Art is art only if it helps your soul fly on eagles' wings,
If music is not uplifting to the human soul, then it just isn't music.
It should allow you to see and feel where you otherwise couldn't see and feel.

Here's a bit of trivia to use when the conversation at your next cocktail party grinds to a boring halt. Try asking if anybody knows what song is sung more often than any other. The response is usually White Christmas or Silent Night (maybe the National Anthem or G-d Bless America). Wrong, the song that is sung more often than any other is... drum roll please... "Happy Birthday To You"
A melody composed by Mildred J. Hill, June 27, 1829.

The above songs are what the "big band era" called "the standards".
